The sighting happened to my husband, whom we’ll refer to as Mr. K, and me as we were driving home to Kuranda, about twenty kilometers northwest of Cairns, at 12:15 am one Sunday morning. Our journey took us through the sugar cane farms along the Cook Highway before ascending a winding road on the Kuranda Range.
As we passed the Yorkeys Knob turnoff, I noticed a large, white, spherical light to our right, seemingly stationary, about 200 meters away and 100 meters above the sugar fields. Intrigued, we slowed down to get a better look before continuing on. Shortly after making a right turn at the Lake Placid intersection, we spotted the same light ahead, now an orange-red hue. However, it quickly disappeared from view behind some trees due to the motion of our car.
Taking the winding road up the range, we drove cautiously, as my husband usually does at night. It took us about fourteen minutes to reach the second lookout. There, we once again saw the light, this time white in color and further away, positioned directly in front of the lookout. Another car was parked nearby, indicating that they, too, had seen the light. To avoid any danger on the blind corner, my husband continued driving past the lookout, and we lost sight of the object as we ascended further up the range.
Throughout the encounter, we experienced no unusual effects on ourselves or our vehicle. We estimated the size of the object to be approximately ten meters.
