Like most people when it comes to the weird and wonderful I choose to run with the “see to believe” motto. Included were the stories of the yowie until one unforgettable night in August 2001. Myself and two mates had organised a camping/fishing trip on a very remote property outside of Walgett that was supposed to go for two weeks.
When we arrived at the property the chap that owned the place a good friend of my mate’s dad told us the fishing should be good because no one had access to the property for years. We weren’t allowed any guns or dogs on the property and the owner did warn us about possible feral dogs that might be around.
We had set up camp and settled in with a few cold beers. The camp was on the top side of a steep valley and back from the river about 50m. On the first night after calling it quits and going to bed it would have been around 12.30am in the morning I heard something rustling around outside I put it down to wildlife or possibly the feral dogs we had been warned about.
The next night we all heard the sounds again we got up to check it out but there was nothing out of the ordinary no sign of anything. On the third night as usual we set off at around 11.30pm to check our fishing lines one last time before hitting bed.
On our return to the camp (we could just see the fire in the distance) we heard a large bang noise that came from the camp. We all ran back to camp and as we arrived at the camp we noticed that one of two lift top freezers that we had converted into eskies to keep food and fish we had caught in that was on the back of my mates ute had been tipped down on its side. We began to look around with our torches then one of my mates who was searching over near the valley let out a scream that I can only describe as terror.
Myself and my other friend ran to where he was and as we got there I could hear something racing down the valley. It was moving so fast it sounded like something falling through the trees. When it got to the bottom of the valley it started to head back up the other side of the valley and that’s when I could see it in our torch lights.
It was around 6-6½ feet tall at a guess and thick set it took cover on the side of the valley and then sat very still. We stayed there quietly with no movement for around 8 minutes with our torch lights focused on it. The strange thing was we knew it was still there as it hadn’t moved away but it was so hard to see it, it just blended into the surroundings so well.
We decided to creep forward to try and see it better, get a better view but as soon as we moved it would move, low and fast. We would stop it would stop. We crept about 20m down the valley in this same pattern then all of a sudden there where a series of sharp loud cracking noises coming from our right up the valley they sounded like rocks and sticks being struck together.
As we focused on these noises the one that we had seen hiding across from us took off up the valley again we could hear it moving very fast and I mean
