I’m writing to share a chilling experience I had back in 2013 during a camping trip in Hotspur, Victoria. The property, known as the ‘bush block,’ is nestled near the Crawford River and Crawford River Regional Park. Owned by a friend’s uncle, the property boasts a single, old one-bedroom cabin, with no mains power and limited cell reception.

During the camping trip, my friends and I set up tents about 300 meters from the cabin. One night, as we settled in around a campfire, we heard strange noises outside our tents around 2 am. It sounded like a large animal circling us, sometimes on all fours and other times on two legs. The creature’s heavy footsteps and occasional sniffing left us on edge.

As the noises persisted, the atmosphere grew more unsettling. The creature emitted deep, guttural growls that escalated into what sounded like rough laughter. Paralyzed with fear, we lay still for about 30 minutes until the creature eventually moved away into the bush.

Our relief was short-lived when we heard deep cries or howls emanating from a distance about 400-500 meters away, followed by responses from neighboring bushland. The calls resembled those attributed to Bigfoot, sending shivers down our spines. Unable to sleep, we remained on edge until morning.

The following day, we stumbled upon a pile of bones lodged in the mud near Kangaroo Creek, adding an eerie dimension to our experience.

Despite our terror, my friend and I contemplated returning to the site with audio recorders or camera traps for further investigation. While we haven’t revisited since 2015, the memory of that night lingers, urging us to seek answers.
